Stability and growth
Under President Adama Barrow, re-elected in 2021 and with elections scheduled for 5 December 2026, the country combines democratic consolidation with growth of 5.6% in 2024. Its population is around 2.58 million and GDP per capita stands at USD 2,400.
Why it matters to the Canary Islands
The Gambia has joined the INTERREG MAC 2021-2027 cooperation area, which connects it directly with the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira. Eight projects are under way with Gambian partners, all of them led by Canary Islands organisations, in addition to the strategic project ATLANTE.
